About Me:
My name is Melissa and I live in Berkeley, California, with my greyhound and rats. I've been making jewelry for as long as I can remember, but I really got bit by the bead bug about six years ago. I'm currently studying environmental biology at the University of California, Berkeley. I have an inordinate fondness for beetles, tapirs, pigs, and pretty much anything with a cute nose.
About Honeycomb:
I've been working under the name Honeycomb for four years now. The name comes from my name; Melissa means "honey bee" in Greek and it's something I really identify with. To me, bees symbolize a strong work ethic, empowerment, evolution, community, and creativity. I strive to uphold these things in my jewelry. I always use the best quality materials and tools. Each piece is designed and handmade with care by me.
My inspiration:
I first started making jewelry when I was very young, under the tutelage of my grandmother, Shirley Ogus, who also made jewelry. She was a woman who was beautiful, talented, funny, and forever good-natured. Her jewelry was gorgeous and her sense of style was incredible. She encouraged me and believed in me all along. Every loop I wrap, every bead I string, is inspired by her. She passed away in October of 2006 after a long illness caused by strokes. She was truly a wonderful person. I think of her often and, though she is gone, her love continues to affect me and inspire my creations.
